William Creek
was named in November 1859 by explorer John
McDouall Stuart during his expeditions in the area. William
was the second son of John Chambers, a pioneer pastoralist of
South Australia and a strong ally of Stuart's.
Once part
of the Ghan train line, William Creek has always been a very small
town, even at its peak there were just a few cottages, a small
school and a hotel-store. But just opposite this tiny settlement
lies the largest and most famous cattle station in the world,
Anna Creek. The property is 30,114 square kms making up just 25%
of the Kidman lands, which total 117,706 square kms - the size
of England.
