NORTHERN SECTION
North Central Section | Central Section | Southern Section

In order to complete the monumental task of constructing the 2,770km Overland Telegraph line within the 18 month time limit, the project was subdivided into 4 sections:

The Northern Section was to be completed by private contractors Joseph Darwent and William Dalwood and spanned 960km from Darwin to Tennant Creek. The contactors however, made it only as far as the Katherine River before floods, bogged-down horses and spoiled food took their toll and many of the construction party refused to work any further in the harsh tropical conditions. Todd sacked the contractors and a government party took over, completing the construction of the line from Katherine to Tennant Creek.
