Welcome to Lyndhurst

The Lyndhurst ochre quarries, just 5 kilometres north of Lyndhurst were hugely important to the Aboriginals as they provided a rich source of multi-coloured ochre for their ceremonies.

Lyndhurst and other quarries were the main focus of well used Aboriginal trade routes which spread north into the Northern Territory and Queensland and south to the coast. An amnesty arrangement allowed members of far away tribes to visit and take large amounts of ochre from Lyndhurst. No European mining has ever occurred here and it is listed on the Register of the National Estate.
