Many towns
in South Australia and the Northern Territory owe their existence
to the Overland Telegraph Line, and to Sir
Charles Todd (then Superintendent of Telegraphs) who constructed
the 3200km line from Pt.
Augusta to Darwin. The
line itself played a great part in Federation and connecting the
colonies of Australia together to form one nation.
By developing
the line it established the first contact between Indigenous
Australians and the colonies, connected Australia to the rest
of the world, helped to advance and increase Australia's trading
industries and defence systems, while also opening up the centre
of Australia for pastoral development, mineral exploration and
vital transport infrastructure such as the Ghan railway.
