Powerpoint Instructions

Use the following instructions to create your PowerPoint presentation. When asked to select an option from the dialog box, you can click on that option and then click the OK button or you can select the option by double-clicking on it.

After completing any slide you may review your work by clicking on the Slide Show button to view the current slide or see the whole presentation by returning to slide 1 before clicking on the Slide Show button. Click the left mouse button to advance slides or the right mouse button to retrieve to the previous slide.

Getting Started

  • Open the PowerPoint 97 software.
  • In the opening dialog box, click "Blank Presentation" and click OK.
  • Select the first option (title slide) from the new dialog box and click OK.
  • Save your file

Designing your First Slide

  • Click in the Title text box and type your title.
  • Click in the sub-title text box and type your subtitle.
  • Save your file by simply clicking on the floppy disk icon.

Creating a Bulleted Slide

  • Click the New Slide button located on the "Common Tasks" toolbar. (If the "Common Tasks" toolbar is unavailable, select View / Toolbars from the Menu Bar and turn on the checkbox next to "Common Tasks")
  • Select the second option (bulleted list) from the new slide dialog box and click OK.
  • Click in the Title text box and type the title for your slide.
  • Click in the bulleted text box and enter your information, pressing Enter after each entry.
  • To Demote or Indent a bullet press the TAB key or the Demote button, type the next line of text, and press Enter.
  • To Promote a bullet press Shift + TAB or the Promote button, type the next line of text, and press Enter.
  • Save your file.

Creating Text Animation

  • Click inside the bulleted text box to select the bulleted area.
  • Select Slide Show / Preset Animation from the Menu Bar.
  • Select the animation effect (also called build effect).
  • With the bulleted text box still selected, select Slide Show / Custom Animation...
  • In the "Introduce text" section, change the "Grouped By" box to however many levels of bullets there are.
  • Click OK.
  • Run the Slide Show and click the mouse to view the effects.
  • Save your file.

Running the entire presentation

  • Switch to Slide Sorter View.
  • Click or double click on Slide 1.
  • Click the Slide Show Viewer.
  • Press the left mouse button to advance the slide show presentation and the right mouse button to return your presentation to the previous slide.
  • Press ESC at any time to exit the slide show and return to slide view.

Working With Text

  • Click the New Slide button.
  • Select the AutoLayout option you desire from the new slide dialog box.
  • Click in the Title text box and type the title.
  • Click in the Text box and type the text shown.
  • Select the text to be formatted by clicking at the beginning and then dragging the mouse to the end.
  • From the Format menu, choose Font.
  • In the Font dialog box select font, font style, font size, font color, etc.
  • Save your file.

More Custom Animation

  • Click in the Text box you would like to animate.
  • Select Slide Show / Custom Animation... from the Menu Bar.
  • In the "Entry Animation and Sound" section, select the text transition and an appropriate sound effect.
  • Click OK. Save your file.

Applying a Presentation Template

  • Press the "Apply Design" button located on the "Common Tasks" toolbar.
  • Choose from the available templates. Click Apply.
  • Note: If you change templates, be aware that fonts, font sizes, font colors and font styles may change, as well.

Working With Graphics

  • Click the New Slide button.
  • Select one of the clip art layouts from the new slide dialog box.
  • Click in the Title text box and type the title.
  • Double-click in the clip art box to bring up the PowerPoint Clip Art Gallery.
  • Scroll down and click on a category.
  • Scroll down until you see the Duck Smashing Computer clip.
  • Double-click on the clip to select it.
  • Save your file.

Sizing and Moving an Object

  • Size the object (duck smashing computer) proportionally by dragging one of the four corner handles while holding down the Shift key.
  • Move the object by dragging the object with the pointer positioned within the object area.

Even more custom animation...

  • Note: Another method to reach custom animation...
  • Right click on the object and select "Custom animation..."
  • Select the Timing tab and set the object to enter the slide automatically after a certain number of seconds.
  • Select the Effects tab to choose an animation and sound effect. Save your file.

Working With Sound

  • Click the New Slide button.
  • Select the appropriate auto layout from the new slide dialog box.
  • Click in the Title text box and type the title.
  • From the Insert Menu choose "Movies and Sounds / Sound from file".
  • In the Insert Sound dialog box, select the drive and directory in which the sound file is located.
  • With the speaker icon selected, choose Slide Show / Custom Animation.
  • Select the Timing tab and set the sound to play either on mouse click or automatically after a given number of seconds.
  • Select the Play Settings tab and select "Hide while not playing" and "Continue slide show".
  • Run the slide show to hear the sound effect. Save your file.

Adding a Transition to your presentation

  • Switch to Slide Sorter View.
  • Select Edit / Select All from the Menu Bar.
  • Select Slide Show / Slide Transition... from the Menu Bar.
  • Select a transition effect and speed.
  • Click Apply.

Run the Slide Show in its entirety
