Prepare Now

What do you do NOW ?

  1. Teacher's will need their own email account and be able to check it regularly, especially if they want to participate in PD sessions and discuss strategies with other teachers.
  2. Students will need a email account. This will be useful when students are entering in the competitions throughout the event. Students can use a class email or teacher email if individual emails can not be organised.
  3. A management strategy for checking email regularly. It is also important that all students have a go at checking/sending emails so a rotational checklist may have to be developed.
  4. Organise student access to computers with Internet/email set up.

There are stages in this event:-

1. Preparing for the major event (April 30th - June 17th 2001)

  • Register for the Connecting the Continent event
  • Use the lesson plans and webquest for classroom ideas. The lessons are designed to be flexible so if planning a theme around Australia and/or Federation the lessons can be integrated.
  • Investigate the Connecting the Continent Website for additional resources - remember the event is not live until June 18th, 2001
  • Start the Webquest
  • Become involved in the organised online professional development program for teachers using EdNA chat and discussion forums. See the online calendar for dates/times.

2. The major event - Connecting the Continent (18th June - 1st July 2001)

Use the online activities on the website to explore the role of telecommunications in nation building from the Overland Telegraph Line to the future of the information revolution.

  • Ensure students check their email regularly, especially if they have submitted any information for the competitions
  • Teachers are encouraged to participate in the online PD activities and discussion on the email discussion list
  • Ensure all your students have time to participate in the various online activities on the website
  • Continue with lessons and webquest
  • Participate as a class in the online forums and chats through out the major event. Choose any of the discovery forums available for your students. For example, come and meet Benjiman Lee who is a Youth Ambassador for Federation. He hopes that in the future all the different cultures of Australia will have the ability to mix and get along together
  • Celebrate with a CONNECT party!

In each stage, online help and PD will be available for teachers in organised sessions or by contacting the project officers if required.
