Where is Here

TEACHER NOTES

BAND: Middle Years

LEARNING AREA(S): Science

TOPIC / CONCEPT: Where is Here

STUDENT TASK OVERVIEW:
Charles Todd and the team of workers constructing the Overland Telegraph Line (OTL) between 1870-1872 needed to accurately know where they were each day so they could make a map of where the OTL went. That meant finding their latitude and longitude.

This activity steps you through how to find your school's latitude and longitude the way that Charles Todd did. It demonstrates how to take a bit of space to define what "position" meant to an early explorer.

TIMELINE: 2 weeks
STUDENT TASK:
The student task, "Where is Here" is on a PDF document that is to be downloaded. To be able to do this you will need to have installed on your computer, Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Acrobat Reader you will need to download this program.

To read PDF files you may need to install the Adobe Acrobat Plug-in, easily obtainable here.
