ABOUT
THIS PROJECT
Connecting
the Continent is presented by Centenary of Federation South
Australia in partnership with Centenary of Federation Northern
Territory and the Department of Administrative and Information
Services South Australia.
Connecting
the Continent celebrates the one hundred years of Australian
nationhood. Connecting the Continent not only celebrates the
role of telecommunications in nation building, it also highlights
the amazing history of the Overland Telegraph and provides a
listing document of life in Australia in 2001.
The
success of this project has largely been due to the enthusiasm
and the hard work of the communities and the many organisations
who have had made a contribution to the development of this
web site.
We
thank the communities for their generosity in providing material
for the on-line event and the web site, and for their unstinting
enthusiasm. They are the real heroes of this story.

On
January 1, 1901, the six colonies of Australia came together to
form a Federation and Australia began its journey to new nationhood.
In
2001, after 100 years, Australia is celebrating the Centenary
of Federation and attention is focussed on Australia's achievements,
future and history.
The
Centenary is a national event which provides a focus for recognising
the nation's achievements since Federation, strengthening national
confidence and identity and enhancing our sense of unity, purpose
and direction for the next century.
The
Overland Telegraph, built by the colony of South Australia in
1870 - 1872, provided Australia's first electric communication
with the rest of the world. It was an extraordinary feat of construction
across 2,000 miles of land largely unexplored by Europeans. The
Overland Telegraph assisted the new federated nation of Australia
to advance trade and defence.

Centenary
of Federation South Australia and Centenary of Federation Northern
Territory have joined to present this special on-line event, which
celebrates the role of telecommunications in nation building,
from the Overland Telegraph to the future of the information revolution.
