Jun 18, 12:39: Gayle> At some of our schools students learn Aboriginal languages
Jun 18, 12:40: Gayle> Getting jobs is very difficult for Aboriginal people as there is still a lot of racism in our town but we run courses in Office Admin, Horticulture, tourism and literacy and numeracy
Jun 18, 12:41: Gayle> Not in the actual curriculum but I modify it to suit my students, their culture and region
Jun 18, 12:41: Jolanda> What is the most popular aboriginal Languge taught in Port Augusta?

Welcome to the CTC chat room!
 Jun 18, 12:42: Gayle> hi Jimi
Jun 18, 12:43: Karen> Why do you think there is still so much racism in Port Augusta?
Jun 18, 12:44: jimi> hi Gayle, Kaz. This is James Boundy, I thought I'd check in to see how it's going
Jun 18, 12:44: Gayle> I think that it is always easy to blame someone when the town is depressed and there is also a huge lack of understanding of Aboriginal culture in the non-Aboriginal community
 Jun 18, 12:45: Gayle> HI James!
Jun 18, 12:46: Gayle> People need to understand that Aboriginal culture is as vital today as it always was and it still rules the lives of the Aboriginal people. There is a belief that it is all over but the cultures here are still very strong
Jun 18, 12:46: Karen> Hi James - good to see you!
Jun 18, 12:46: Karen> Jolanda do your students have some questions for Gayle about Aboriginal culture?
Jun 18, 12:46: Gayle> The most popular languages taught are Pitjantjatjara and Adnyamathanha
Jun 18, 12:47: Gayle> Adnyamathanha is the language of the Flinders Ranges
Jun 18, 12:48: Jolanda> How long have you worked in Port Augusta?
Jun 18, 12:48: Gayle> Arabana is also taught and that is the language of the Marree area
Jun 18, 12:49: Gayle> 12 years in Port Augusta but I grew up in the Flinders Ranges at a little place called Beltana
Jun 18, 12:49: jimi> How many regional dialects would there have been around the Port Augusta area?

Jun 18, 12:52: Jolanda> How many hours do you work in a week?

Jun 18, 12:54: Karen> Where are you from Colin?
Jun 18, 12:55: Gayle> so I will try again, Pt Augusta was traditionally a meeting place for Aborignal people and so there have always been many languages represented here but we currently have about 22
Jun 18, 12:55: Colin> Southern Yorke Peninsula ( Down South)

 Jun 18, 12:59: Jessica> Adelaide hills
Jun 18, 12:59: jimi> thanks for that Gayle, I'm refreshing a bit slowly at the moment, so it took me a while to get the response anyway
 Jun 18, 13:00: Jessica> adelaide hills
Jun 18, 13:00: Gayle> I was very fortunate to grow up in the Flinders Ranges and learn a lot about Adnyamathanha people and their culture and so I have been interested since I was ten and it just seemed the obvious choice
Jun 18, 13:00: Denni> If you know anything about the school of air can you whisper to me please!
Jun 18, 13:01: Jessica> so what can you tell us Gayle?

Jun 18, 13:04: Jessica> do you enjoy working in TAFE?
Jun 18, 13:04: Gayle> I think Centenary of Federation is an important celebration for Australia but we need to remember that Aborignal people were here for thousands of years before that
Jun 18, 13:04: Denni> Oops! This topic is walking together. What is that about? That has nothing to do with centenury of federation does it?!
Jun 18, 13:04: Denni> Karen..Can you give me more information
Jun 18, 13:04: Jessica> Sure Jolanda but we dont get it
Jun 18, 13:04: Gayle> So I think this website is great as it has a focus on Aboriginal connections as well as the very important work of the Overland Telegraph
Jun 18, 13:05: Jolanda> unfortunately I don't think we have any aboriginal enrollemnts at our school, so the students are limited in that contact here.
