Topic: Oodnadatta - My Town (730-830pm CST)
Jun 26, 19:59: Roger> Hi everyone - I am in the memorial hall at Oodnadatta - it is coold but fine weather today
Jun 26, 20:00: Lynnie> And hello to everyone too I am in Canberra and it is colder than Oodnadatta let me tell you
Jun 26, 20:00: Kate> Hi and welcome to the chat with Lynnie from the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta. Any questions about Oodnadatta or the Pink Roadhouse. Lynnie I have not been to Oodnadatta is the Roadhouse really Pink or is it just called that?
Jun 26, 20:01: Lynnie> The roadhouse and anything else we can paint is pinkpinkpink
Jun 26, 20:02: Roger> i'm staying in the pink bunkhouse tonight
 Jun 26, 20:02: Lynnie> canoes,scales,tractor,vehicle wheels,
Jun 26, 20:03: Kate> I remember Brett Williams web page he created about the Pink Roadhouse. That was great.
Jun 26, 20:03: Kate> Did he work with you on that?
Jun 26, 20:03: Kate> why would you need canoes in Oodnadatta?
Jun 26, 20:03: Lynnie> Brett did a great job then my husband Adam got to it and added some history and I didnt edit it so it is a bit confusing to start
Jun 26, 20:04: Roger> lynnie - what special appeal does Oodnadatta hold for you
Jun 26, 20:04: Lynnie> We need canoes because we just had 85 ml of winter rain very unusual but we can canoe to Lake Eyre now
Jun 26, 20:05: Lynnie> Roger I like the space, peace and quiet that Oodnadatta can offer and it feels adventurous as well, challenging I suppose
Jun 26, 20:05: Kate> Wow that is exciting Lynnie - yeah wasn't really thinking was I.
Jun 26, 20:06: Kate> Do you have a lot of Tourist through Oodnadatta and the Pink Roadhouse?
Jun 26, 20:06: Roger> did you grow up as a child in Oodnadatta
Jun 26, 20:06: Lynnie> At the same time there is millions of jobs so it is never boring
Jun 26, 20:07: Lynnie> In winter we have a big tourist season from April to September and employ about six staff, down to four in summer
Jun 26, 20:08: Kate> Why is the Pink Roadhouse painted pink? Was it like it when you bought it or did you go with pink?
Jun 26, 20:08: Lynnie> I grew up in Canberra and turned up in Oodnadatta via Alice Springs when I was 21
Jun 26, 20:09: Lynnie> Adam my husband pinched the idea from seeing pink cement trucks in Sydney in the eighties
Jun 26, 20:09: Kate> It is beautiful up that way now with all the rain. Did you get cut off due to sooo much rain in such a short time?
Jun 26, 20:09: Roger> wow! - have things changed a lot in town since then
Jun 26, 20:11: Lynnie> Kate we were isolated for about six days but we still had telephones, just no travellers and we had enough supplies to survive
Jun 26, 20:12: Kate> I'm glad Lynnie. Where do you get your main supplies from ? the port or adelaide or elsewhere?
Jun 26, 20:12: Lynnie> Oodnadatta changed from a railway town into an ab original town the pop is 95percent aboriginal
Jun 26, 20:13: Lynnie> We get nearly all our goods from Adelaide and up until this year we transported all our own gear including fuel, food, freight for stations and locals, anything
Jun 26, 20:14: Roger> does living in oodnadatta pose any special problems that people in big cities may not at first appreciate?
Jun 26, 20:14: Kate> Lynnie I dont know much about Oodnadatta other than what Brett W. has told me. What are the main services/places in Oodnadatta. Is the Pink Roadhouse the heart of the town?
Jun 26, 20:16: Lynnie> Yes - now for example I am in Canberra because my aging dad is in hospital. I raised my family of four children with Adam and no immediate family in the same state. You have to travel to see family ours are in Sydney and Canberra but we made that choice not consciously I might add There is many a time I wish for my family to be closer
Jun 26, 20:16: mango has entered the room
 Jun 26, 20:16: Welcome mango,

Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 26, 20:17: Kate> Hi Mango welcome to the chat with Lynnie. HI Ann welcome
Jun 26, 20:17: Kate> Where did your kids go to school Lynnie?
Jun 26, 20:18: Lynnie> The main street is the heart of the town and it is bitumen, most other streets are dirt. We have government services like a school, hospital and police and of course a pub another store and a museum with a great photographic history of the area
Jun 26, 20:18: mango> good evening everybody especially Lynnie
Jun 26, 20:19: Lynnie> My kids were educated at the Oodna Aboriginal School until about ten or eleven then we sent them to Pembroke in Adelaide
Jun 26, 20:19: Ann> Hi Lynnie Ann & Jan here - enjoy your maps - are you still making them? Still have the pink signs?
Jun 26, 20:19: Kate> Mango where are you chatting from tonight?
Jun 26, 20:19: Lynnie> Hello mango are u in disguise
Jun 26, 20:20: Kate> Hi Ann and Jan where are you chatting from tonight?
 Jun 26, 20:20: mango> me? um wiya
Jun 26, 20:20: Lynnie> Ann and Jan - Adam makes the mudmaps and the signs and I talk about them
Jun 26, 20:21: Kate> When did the Roadhouse go Pink Lynnie?
Jun 26, 20:21: Ann> Kate we are just old travellers from Adelaide
Jun 26, 20:21: Lynnie> Mango is my dogs name and wiya means no in the local antikirinya dialect
Jun 26, 20:22: Kate> Great Ann. Obviously you enjoyed Oodnadatta?
Jun 26, 20:22: mango> why did you have to travel so far for a mammogram?
Jun 26, 20:22: Lynnie> The roadhouse got its first paint job about 1985
Jun 26, 20:22: Kate> Oh .. do you think it may be one of your family Lynnie?
Jun 26, 20:23: Lynnie> Oodnadatta is 200 kms from Coober Pedy and we had to wait for the Breastscreen SA bus to come to our part of the country to access the services
Jun 26, 20:23: Ann> Lynnie we stayed with Edith Clark not long after her snake bite. Do you know if Allandale Station still offers B&B?
Jun 26, 20:24: Lynnie> Mango may have the same name as my daughter Ruby
Jun 26, 20:25: Kate> Running a business in a small town do you get the opportunity to go on holidays?
Jun 26, 20:25: Lynnie> Ann Edith lives in Adelaide now and her son Andrew and dinlaw Donnaugh do not offer the band b as they have three young sons - two attend the Oodna school and have to be driven daily 17 kms one way each day
Jun 26, 20:26: Kate> What is the best time to visit Oodnadatta ?
Jun 26, 20:26: Lynnie> January is our quietest and one of the hottest months so we take a break for three or four weeks and head to the east coast with the kids and I fish fish fish
Jun 26, 20:27: mango> who looks after the roadhouse when you are away?
Jun 26, 20:27: Lynnie> All times are the best times to visit Oodna of course, but I would suggest for less of a challenge the winter months
Jun 26, 20:28: Roger> as there fish in the waterholes around Oodnadtta now lynnie
Jun 26, 20:29: Lynnie> We cant just close down the roadhouse because we are the post office and bank agency and a tourist info service so my post office assistant Lee maybe alias Mango kindly takes the steering wheel
Jun 26, 20:29: Ann> Lynnie A pity as the old homestead ideal. Does anyone offer similar B&B & wonderful tours of old telegraph line, Algebuckina Bridge etc?
Jun 26, 20:29: Kate> Lucky to have people like Mango Lynnie
Jun 26, 20:30: Lynnie> Roger there are fish but usually the size of a small sardine - there are bony brim, speckled perch and yellow belly. The locals fish successfully with a hand line and cook the fish whole in its skin on coals
Jun 26, 20:31: Kate> If I had never been up near Oodnadatta what would you recommend I see and how long would I need to do it?
Jun 26, 20:31: Ann> Lynnie How green is the country? I am off to Harts Range NE Alice Springs Next week.
Jun 26, 20:32: Lynnie> Outback Research - Phill and Ifeta Gee based in Coober Pedy offer a four day or more tour of the Peake Denison area south of Algebuckina seated or walking beside a camel. Verrrry popular trip and on the internet
Jun 26, 20:34: Lynnie> Kate - the Oodnadatta Track has lots of history both overland telegraph and ghan railway and is often driveable in a two wheel drive. You would need a good week to travel up past lake eyre up the track to Oodna on to Dalhousie thermal ponds on the edge of the simpson and home more like two weeks
Jun 26, 20:35: Kate> I can only wish Lynnie.... One day I will get there.
Jun 26, 20:35: Lynnie> The country is an explosion of greens and soon the wildflowers will bloom - Harts Range will be the same. The country looks fresh and beautiful for the coming school holidays
Jun 26, 20:37: Lynnie> Jump in your volkswagon and drive the bitumen to Coober Pedy and take it steady 200 kms to Oodna - hey presto you are in the best area of the state
 Jun 26, 20:37: Lynnie> Mango - are u in Oodna
Jun 26, 20:37: Ann> Lynne Thankyou for speaking to us. First time we have used a chat room but because it was "Oodna" and we have special memories we had a go Ann & Jan
 Jun 26, 20:38: Bongo> there's a new section added to the site featuring Phil Gee ... http://www.connectingthecontinent.com /ctcwebsite/philgee/philgee1.htm
Jun 26, 20:38: Roger> be careful when the roads are wet - a young couple have just been pulled out of a bog some km south of ooodnadatta tonight and are now in lynnies bunkhouse for the night
Jun 26, 20:39: Lynnie> Roger are you asleep yet? Did you enjoy the drive across the moon plain and lollypop plain to Oodna from Coober Pedy today?
 Jun 26, 20:39: mango> Mango - alias Lee & Martyn - are missing you
Jun 26, 20:40: Kate> At last we know who Mango is ... didn't think it was the dog!!
Jun 26, 20:40: Lynnie> Roger - fortunately in winter a wet road is not life and death, usually an adventure and bogs are great stories for the family - aye Mango?
Jun 26, 20:41: mango> happy Harry has arrived also
Jun 26, 20:41: Lynnie> Lee and Martyn are my dear friends in Oodnadatta . Lee runs our post office and everything else with Adam whilst I am away and Martyn Martin is our RN and he features on the main Oodna webpage I love them both
Jun 26, 20:41: Kate> Lynnie can you tell us some of the stories good and bad of Oodnadatta?
Jun 26, 20:42: Roger> the trip was just great - the road between the breakawys and moon plain is still closed
Jun 26, 20:42: Kate> Mango may have a few stories to tell us as well by the sounds of it?
Jun 26, 20:42: Lynnie> Hello harry - get back to the roadhouse kitchen and cook those oodnaburgers right now
Jun 26, 20:43: Kate> Are they pink too Lynnie?
Jun 26, 20:45: Roger> Harry cooked an Oodnaburger for me today - very tasty
Jun 26, 20:45: Lynnie> a good story - I meet more people each day than I would in a week in Canberra and I can ask lots of questions about people which I like doing a bad thing - no decent internet speeds is frustrating and no decent road opening and closure system which is financially devestating for us as small business people
Jun 26, 20:45: Bongo> are you actually in the Pink Roadhouse now, Lynnie?
Jun 26, 20:46: Lynnie> the beetroot makes the pink colour in the oodnaburgers - have a look at one on our webpage
Jun 26, 20:47: Lynnie> Bongo I am in Canberra visiting my sick aged dad and my twin and her family - I am loving the break I am happy to report but sorry to miss connecting the continent in Oodna
