Room: Chat with Tracy Spencer from Hawker at 9am
Topic: Community Builders
 Jun 19, 09:35: Karen> Hi there!
Jun 19, 09:36: Tracy> Hi: I'm here awaiting interesting questions about life in Hawker. Any takers?
Jun 19, 09:36: Tracy> Hi Karen, where are you from?
Jun 19, 09:36: Karen> The Community Builders projects you talk about on the website are really interesting - how long have you been involved?
 Jun 19, 09:37: Karen> G'day there Pat!
Jun 19, 09:39: john has left the room
Jun 19, 09:39: Melanie> What does the Community Builders Project involve?
Jun 19, 09:39: Tracy> Hi Melanie: where are you from?
Jun 19, 09:39: Karen> Tracy you can up your refresh rate by clicking on Options (usually set to 30 seconds)
 Jun 19, 09:40: Melanie> I'm from Adelaide
 Jun 19, 09:40: Karen> I'm from Adelaide too!
Jun 19, 09:40: Tracy> Community Builders is an idea that comes from rural WA, and a similar thing in rural Victoria, which tries to encourage local people to find ways to reinvigorate their communities, socially and economically.
Jun 19, 09:41: Luke has entered the room
Jun 19, 09:41: Karen> Do you work with the other State Community Builder Groups or is it pretty much a town by town thing?
Jun 19, 09:41: Melanie> Is the whole town involved?
Jun 19, 09:41: Belinda has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:41: Welcome Belinda,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:42: Karen> Hi Belinda - where are you from?
Jun 19, 09:42: Tracy> Hi Luke. Karen, yes there were 5 other regions doing it at the same time, and my region had 10 small communities involved, with their reps meeting together on amonthly basis, and doing work in their own patch in between.
 Jun 19, 09:43: Tracy> Hi Belinda
Jun 19, 09:43: Belinda> G'day Tracy- its your fellow playgrouper!
Jun 19, 09:44: Tracy> All the community builder coordinators got together for their training, and phone link conferences, to support each other and act as colleagues too.
Jun 19, 09:44: Melanie> What are some of the projects
Jun 19, 09:44: Tracy> Where have you deserted your baby, Belinda?
Jun 19, 09:44: Gwyneth has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:44: Welcome Gwyneth,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:45: Karen> You were talking about childcare needs in Hawker on the website too - have you already done something about it?
Jun 19, 09:45: Belinda> Hi you lot, I'm from sunny hawker. Thought I'd check us out on line
Jun 19, 09:45: Melanie> Is Hawker Sunny today??
Jun 19, 09:46: pierre has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:46: Welcome pierre,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:46: Belinda> I have the kid right here, abandoned for the computer again!
Jun 19, 09:46: Karen> Looks sunny in the webcam!
Jun 19, 09:46: Tracy> Some of the projects from community builders in the Flinders region are a community cafe/internet etc center at Hawker, Beltana is seeking to do up its historic well, and run a craft and music festival in the year of the outback 2002, Leigh Creek were trying to train young people to be life guards at their pool, Lyndhurst was building an outback icon at the pub (have to go there and ask Rick about the details, Blinman are building a tourism cernter based on their mining heritage, Copley is following up a youth arts project painting the Stobie poles, Quorn raised money for their football...
Jun 19, 09:46: pierre> hi belinda its pierre
Jun 19, 09:47: Belinda> soory i took so long to respond, I've only just worked out what to do
Jun 19, 09:47: Karen> How do you go about raising money for all these projects?
Jun 19, 09:47: Tracy> Hi Pierre: is it sunny where you are too?
Jun 19, 09:48: Gwyneth has left the room
Jun 19, 09:48: Belinda> pierre as in hilder or frog?
Jun 19, 09:48: pierre> yes it is sunny in hawker
 Jun 19, 09:49: pierre> pierre hilder
Jun 19, 09:49: Melanie> wow! I'm pretty impressed with the projects that are happening...more towns should be like Hawker
Jun 19, 09:49: Wayne has left the room
Jun 19, 09:49: Tracy> Raising money...the community builders project was run at a state level by the State Dept for regional affairs, so they networked us well with various government offices and funding possibilities, especially Stronger familes and Regional Solutions. But that only meant we knew where to start asking...there have been raffles, lucky squares, requests for sponsorship from companies as well as submissions written. There's no short cut, only hard work, and lots of pestering people!
Jun 19, 09:49: Belinda> pierre, are you at school?
Jun 19, 09:50: Belinda> is your whole class on line?
Jun 19, 09:51: Tracy> Melanie: the whole town isn't involved initially, but those who are work hard to get others 'on baord'. Its a process that has to be at the right pace for each community.
Jun 19, 09:51: pierre> yes Iam but I dont want to be
Jun 19, 09:51: Belinda> Hawker looks really great on this web site- what a great job
Jun 19, 09:51: Kate has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:51: Welcome Kate,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:51: pierre> no just me and Kate
 Jun 19, 09:51: Kate> Hi Belinda
Jun 19, 09:52: Belinda> tracy- your typing speed would have to be good to keep chatting
Jun 19, 09:52: george has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:52: Welcome george,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:52: Luke has left the room
 Jun 19, 09:52: Kate> hi pierre
Jun 19, 09:52: Tracy> The childcare proposal we're following - and that includes Belinda too - is because we have no child care in Hawker and no one wants to do Family Day care providing for various reasons, so we had to think what would suit us. We've written to the deptartment, put a motion through ICPA, and will hand Mr Olsen a letter and proposal next Monday when he comes to Port Augusta to give us certificates for being volunteers!
Jun 19, 09:52: pierre> hi kate wazz uppp
Jun 19, 09:52: Belinda> hi kate. what have you done with the rest of the class?
 Jun 19, 09:53: Tracy> Hi George
 Jun 19, 09:53: pierre> good bye everyone
Jun 19, 09:53: pierre has left the room
 Jun 19, 09:53: Kate> Hi Tracey
 Jun 19, 09:53: Tracy> Hi Kate
 Jun 19, 09:53: Belinda> i didn't know john was visiting!
Jun 19, 09:54: Kate> How is it going Tracey? Much luck?
Jun 19, 09:55: Belinda> why is mr Olsen visiting? Who is getting certificates ? What'sthe goss?
Jun 19, 09:55: Tracy> Hey Pierre: come back and tell them about the bike ramps too!
Jun 19, 09:55: Karen> So what is the childcare proposal? How will it work?
Jun 19, 09:55: Tracy> Kate: do I know you and have just vagued out?
Jun 19, 09:55: Kate> The rest of the class is learning Indonisian, ha ha

Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 09:56: Belinda> ha ha salamat pagi
Jun 19, 09:56: Tracy> Mr Olsen is celebrating volunteers with an afternoon tea. Shirley got an invite as Pres of the kindy, and I get to go as Pres of the netball club! Do you want to come too, as a volunteer of course, with kid, as we are, to make our point (loudly)
 Jun 19, 09:56: Yolanda> Hi everyone! What's up?
Jun 19, 09:56: Jack has entered the room
 Jun 19, 09:56: Welcome Jack,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
 Jun 19, 09:57: Tracy> Hi Yolanda
Jun 19, 09:57: Tracy> Kate, do have Mady in your class?
 Jun 19, 09:57: Tracy> Hi Jack
 Jun 19, 09:57: Kate> Hi Belinda
Jun 19, 09:57: Belinda> no volunteers from the social club know about it. how did you get informed?
 Jun 19, 09:58: Yolanda> Hi Tracy.
 Jun 19, 09:58: Kate> Tracy:No I don't have Mady here
Jun 19, 09:58: Karen> So Tracy, you are a Minister, a Community Builder leader, a mum and president of the netball club? And what do you do in your spare time?!
Jun 19, 09:58: Pat has left the room
 Jun 19, 09:59: Kate> goodbye every one
 Jun 19, 09:59: Jack> hi everybody
Jun 19, 09:59: Kate has left the room
Jun 19, 10:00: Gus has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:00: Welcome Gus,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:00: george> Now I think I'm not whispering! What question? Which body sculpture would you like?I have a range of them but they're all difficult to interpret as they're all Scottish!!
Jun 19, 10:00: pierre has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:00: Welcome pierre,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:00: Karen> Hi Jack, hi George - where are you guys from?
 Jun 19, 10:00: Tracy> Hi Gus
 Jun 19, 10:01: Jack> im from adelaide
Jun 19, 10:01: Tracy> Good to hear from you George. I hope life's well with you. The plan for mobile outback counselling is still progressing with RICE, and its just a matter of the dept clarifying the money it will use. A slow but good process.
Jun 19, 10:02: Belinda> Tracy- how were you informed about the afternnon tea with Mr Olsen?
Jun 19, 10:02: Tracy> Gus is not old enough to be allowed to play on my computer at home!
Jun 19, 10:02: pierre> in Hawker we have just got a bmx bike track .it is near the sports centre
Jun 19, 10:03: Yolanda> What do you want to talk about Tracy?
Jun 19, 10:03: Tracy> Belinda, there was some magical list in the premiers office, I imagine. The netball one went to Jan teague first, then has updated to me. I got a phone call to confirm attendance yesterday, so they are serious, but you're allowed to 'take friends' too. Could the Social club get an invite?
Jun 19, 10:04: Tracy> Pierre, do you know what had to happen to get money and action happening for the BMX track?
Jun 19, 10:04: pierre> we are also getting a skate board ramp that is getting built by hildabuilt.we will have it soon
Jun 19, 10:04: Action: NIC - melanie is closed.
Jun 19, 10:05: Belinda> No doubt we were overlooked as usual
Jun 19, 10:05: Belinda> i didn't know that hildabuilt was building the skateboard ramp
Jun 19, 10:05: george> Hello to all these hello's!! I'm logging in from Adelaide on a day off from my work as a comm.ment.health nurse in the Emerg.Dept at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. I'm interested in all things rural and remote because I've just finished three years doing similar work with the RFDS from Port Augusta and have previously worked in Oodnadatta. Today being Hawker's day I'm interested to know if they're drying out up there?
Jun 19, 10:05: Karen> Skate board ramp, BMX track - you guys are really looking after your kids, that's excellent!
Jun 19, 10:05: pierre> to get the bmx track some kids from our school had to ask the council for a grant
Jun 19, 10:06: Belinda> good to hear that the skateboard ramp is actually happening NOW and not another thing just being waited on
Jun 19, 10:06: Karen> How many people live in Hawker? And how many are involved in the Community Builders?
Jun 19, 10:07: Tracy> Yolanda, I'm on this to talk about Hawker, and especially anything that is happening for the development of our community. One of the thjings I spoke about previosuly was community builders. I could add that we get regular mental health workshops open to the community from the visiting mental health social worker, which are really useful.
Jun 19, 10:07: pierre> jimmy matthews also helped some kids to build the track
Jun 19, 10:07: Gus has left the room
Jun 19, 10:07: Yolanda> Seya everyone! i don't really get this chat so i'm leaving.
Jun 19, 10:07: Yolanda has left the room
Jun 19, 10:07: Jack> how much does it end up costing to build ramps and BMX tracks
Jun 19, 10:07: Wayne has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:07: Welcome Wayne,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:08: Belinda> yep, the kids really worked hard to get the skateboard ramp. They had help from some great teachers, not to mention monetary help from local clubs like The Social Club
Jun 19, 10:08: Tracy> George, we're starting to dry out but the northern tracks are still only 4WD. Murray's heading out todat but going to Oodna via the Stuart H'way.
 Jun 19, 10:08: Tracy> Bye Yolanda
Jun 19, 10:09: Tracy> Karen, we've got about 350 people in the town and district. When Hawker has had meetings for its community Cafe, we've got over 20 people coming who are vocal and coming up with good ideas and decisions.
Jun 19, 10:09: pierre> the social club was a great help to get these things
Jun 19, 10:09: Belinda> The BMX track was basically some dirt being dumped on a block of land near the school by Council, I think. The kids and some great helpers in the community sculpted it from there. Such an easy thing to give the kids a "healthy" activity.
Jun 19, 10:10: george> DRats!! I could have gone with him for half a day!! Who's gonna do your mental health visits now that Helen has left AND have you had any Drama input from the Comm.Development M.H.Officer?
 Jun 19, 10:11: pierre> it costs around $4000 I think
Jun 19, 10:11: Belinda> The skateboard ramp, on the other hand, was campaigned for by some middle school students for about two years, I think.
Jun 19, 10:11: Whitney has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:11: Welcome Whitney,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:12: Tracy> The Hawker Social club is an amazing story in itself...fill in the gaps for me Belinda, but the thing that impressed me most, apart from the great fun functions and Xmas gifts for the kids, was that they instituted a fund for giving grants to other community activities after only their first year of operation! Now that is a community social club!
Jun 19, 10:12: Gus has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:12: Welcome Gus,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:12: pierre> its great that us kids will have something to do now
Jun 19, 10:12: Belinda> Pierre, I think it cost more than that- i think the variety club gave a donation that was about $14000- but I'm only going by goss around town
 Jun 19, 10:12: Tracy> Hi Whitney
Jun 19, 10:12: Roger has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:12: Welcome Roger,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
 Jun 19, 10:13: Whitney> Hi everyone
Jun 19, 10:13: Karen> Sounds like Hawker is a really friendly community, working together to make things happen - is it a great place to live?
Jun 19, 10:13: Jack> how much money did the council give you to build the skate ramp
 Jun 19, 10:13: Whitney> Hi Tracy
Jun 19, 10:13: Belinda> It's so great that you kids have worked hard and got something for future generations. You can feel really proud of ya selves I reckon!
Jun 19, 10:14: Tracy> George, Helen came off Hawker a year ago and the name of our person now has just slipped my mind. No, we haven't had any contact from the CD MH worker as far as I know, but maybe they've gone through other channels. I don't attend the MHAG any more since I've finihsed up and am studying...and doing a few other things.
Jun 19, 10:14: Whitney> How are you Tracy
Jun 19, 10:14: pierre> it is a good place to live
Jun 19, 10:14: Belinda> Yes, we love socialising, but one bonus is that not only do you get to meet, have fun and party on a regular basis, you arre helping to distribute money around town for local projects.
Jun 19, 10:15: Tracy> Karen, Hawker is a great place to live. When my family came this way for work, we were offered a few towns to live in (cos our work was mobile across the area) and we chose Hawker and have never regretted it. Its a small community and has those kind of dynamics, which are good and hard at times, but overall it is a supportive place.
Jun 19, 10:16: Tracy> I'm cold Whitney! We might have sunny skies but it was still frosty this morning!
 Jun 19, 10:16: Whitney> Hi Belinda!
Jun 19, 10:16: george> I have to leave and tend to sick day-off-from-school kids. Many thanks for the interesting intro to this 'chatroom' thingy. What a wonderful use of Centenary money! Hope I can catch up with some other familiar places and, Hawker! Keep on hawking and hope to see you when the wildflowers come thru!! Byeee
Jun 19, 10:16: Belinda> Lat year, the social club donated $1000 to local projects- from the kindy, junior basketball, student's skateboard ramp and community builders project
Jun 19, 10:16: Karen> Sport is pretty important to kids in Hawker, isn't it?
 Jun 19, 10:16: pierre> catch ya everyone
Jun 19, 10:16: george has left the room
Jun 19, 10:16: pierre has left the room
Jun 19, 10:17: Tracy> Bye George: drop in when you're up this way!
Jun 19, 10:17: Whitney> I have to go now Tracy SEYA!
 Jun 19, 10:17: Tracy> Hi Roger
Jun 19, 10:17: Belinda> G'day Whitney. Good to see your working hard - ha ha
Jun 19, 10:17: robert has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:17: Welcome robert,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:17: Whitney has left the room
 Jun 19, 10:17: Karen> G'day Robert
Jun 19, 10:18: Pat has entered the room
 Jun 19, 10:18: Welcome Pat,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 19, 10:18: Tracy> Sports a hard one, Karen. Yes its really important, but we're at the stage of having a harder time finding full teams of our own kids. For netball we try to go to a few tournaments, and often other towns are happy to donate any extra players to make \up a team with us if needed. We also have netball training with the juniors every Saturday, and often they get to fill in senior games too.
 Jun 19, 10:19: Tracy> Hi Pat
Jun 19, 10:19: Belinda> Sport is very big in Hawker and why not? It gives a social outlet and a purpose fro which to meet over. But, if competitive sport is not your thing, organised social outings are rare, that's why the social club was formed- to give social opportunities that weren't sport focussed and for all ages
Jun 19, 10:19: Karen> What are the sports facilities like there?
 Jun 19, 10:20: Belinda> G'day Pat, got a break between classes eh?
Jun 19, 10:21: robert has left the room
Jun 19, 10:21: Tracy> The sports facilities are excellent. We had a new sporting complex built a few years back, with tennis, netabll, basketball, golf (blacks not greens, bowls, cricket pitch and a licensed clubhouse that gets used for lots of community meetings too.
Jun 19, 10:21: Belinda> There is a wonderful sporting club, that is another facility that the community raised half the funds for and worked very hard for. The bowling green there is excellent, good tennis courts etc. Its a great asset to the town
Jun 19, 10:22: Belinda> Sorry to be giving a nswers in tandem with you Tracy
Jun 19, 10:23: Gus has left the room
Jun 19, 10:23: Tracy> I think its fair to say that in outback towns, nothing comes too easy and nothing without a fair bit of v\often voluntary work by residents to make it happen. Sometimes that's tiring, but it also generates great community spirit.
Jun 19, 10:24: Pat> Hi All!, I think from the Town Crier Article, the Variety Club donated over $4000 and the total Skateboard ramp project (I have heard) is $14000
Jun 19, 10:24: Tracy> Keep going Belinda: then they know I'm not just making it up!
Jun 19, 10:24: Belinda> Great to be involved in this chat. The web site is great and I congratulate all involved. A great promo for Hawker and district
Jun 19, 10:24: Belinda has left the room
Jun 19, 10:24: Wayne has left the room
Jun 19, 10:26: Karen> Thanks heaps for your time today Tracy - I've learnt lots about Hawker and what happens there!
Jun 19, 10:27: Roger has left the room
Jun 19, 10:28: Tracy> Hi to anyone left: I've just got a letter about our childcare: even though we have 30 kids needing care in 20 familes, DETE will only offer us creche guidelines instead of rural care options because other communities have more demonstrable needs! We have no other options here, even if our 30 kids are less than a l;arger centers numbers! Need should be measured according to options, not just numbers.
Jun 19, 10:28: Pat> Hi Belinda, This is my Indonesian study time now. I have just had the 6/7 class and have given Pierre, Kate, Whitney and Yolanda a chance to use the chat room. The class will be back again at 1:30, when they will be showing the Hawker Community group what theis Connecting the Continent page is all about. I hope you like the videos and the other pictures and audio about a day in the life of Hawker.
Jun 19, 10:28: Tracy> Thanks everyone for your time and interest. Come visit us sometime!
Jun 19, 10:29: Pat> Keep up the good work Tracy. Bye for now.
Jun 19, 10:29: Tracy has left the room
Jun 19, 10:30: Pat has left the room
 Jun 19, 10:30: Jack> seeya everyone
Jun 19, 10:30: Jack has left the room
