Jun 26, 16:39: Chelsea> Did you gat affected by the recent rains?
Jun 26, 16:39: Maryanne> Karen, the best thing about living is Mataranka is the great communityspiirt whiche xists so that all are mostly able to work together to build a better community, the weather, the river and the fishing
Jun 26, 16:40: katrina> Maryanne, do you ride horses and stuff?
Jun 26, 16:40: Maryanne> Melanie, my family name was Martin and there is Martin's road, Martin park etc so hopefully we shall be remembered for some time. Maybe my married name shall live on also
Jun 26, 16:41: Chelsea> How many people live in Mataranka?
Jun 26, 16:41: Maryanne> Katrina, SAince living within the town fulltime, I have sold my horses and acquired two children
Jun 26, 16:41: Melanie> I'd love to have a street or a park named after me.....i'd be telling everyone
Jun 26, 16:42: Maryanne> Chelsea. Mataranka has a pop of approx 250 people including 80 aboriginals who don not live in the town fulltime
Jun 26, 16:42: Chelsea> So it's about four times the size of marree, how do you remember everyone?
Jun 26, 16:42: Melanie> Is that the same amout of responsibility or more!!!!!
Jun 26, 16:43: Liam> bye everyone i have to go
 Jun 26, 16:43: Chelsea> seeya Liam!!
Jun 26, 16:43: Maryanne> Liam. Mataranka is located approx 430 klms south of Darwin, but we are the Capital of the Never Never. in 1914, Gilruth the ADministrator at the time wanted Mat to be the capital of the NT. Imagine that
Jun 26, 16:43: katrina> Liam. Mataranka is approx 400kms south of Darwin in the Never never Land Is this right Maryanne?
Jun 26, 16:44: Maryanne> Many of the families have been in Mat for a while, so all of our children are now growing up with each other
Jun 26, 16:44: katrina> maryanne. sorry, thought you had missed liam's question
Jun 26, 16:44: Chelsea> How has everyone in Mataranka been celebrating the centenary of federation?
Jun 26, 16:44: Melanie> you guys know so much history....thats why i love chatting to people from the different towns, you find out so much...better than reading a book!!!
Jun 26, 16:45: Liam> see yas all later
 Jun 26, 16:45: Liam> see yas later
Jun 26, 16:45: Chelsea has left the room
 Jun 26, 16:45: Liam> bye
Jun 26, 16:45: katrina> Maryanne, how was the Never Never Festival? Lots of good things happen?
Jun 26, 16:45: Maryanne> Having two children is more responsible than having two horses I say. cant turn out the children to the paddock when i have had enough
 Jun 26, 16:45: Melanie> LOL
Jun 26, 16:46: Maryanne> The Never Never Festival was great. seeing so many people return who had not been back to mat for many years, some for 25 years, and seeing expressions on faces was magic
Jun 26, 16:46: Melanie> What is the never never festival...what happens?
Jun 26, 16:47: Maryanne> Mat has celebreated the Cent of Fed through the commissioning of the character statues from the book We of the Never Never. These are lifesize made out of concrete and are located within our park
 Jun 26, 16:48: Melanie> within Martin Park?
Jun 26, 16:48: Maryanne> the Never Never Festival is held the third weekend of May and incorporates rodeo, bush talesd & poetry, cricket, station reunions, art exhibitions and much more. It is a time that the whole town of individuals and business come together to showcase Mat to all visitors new and also those who have in the region previous
Jun 26, 16:49: Maryanne> Yes the statues are located within Martins park
Jun 26, 16:50: katrina> and lets face it, children eat more
Jun 26, 16:50: Melanie> Sounds like fun....where does the term never never come from?
Jun 26, 16:51: Melanie> So i'm better off getting a horse than having kids!!!
Jun 26, 16:51: Maryanne> I would say that all of Mat are aware of the Cent of Fed activities, but Mat is very history orientated through our connection with Elsey Station and Jeannie Gunns book
Jun 26, 16:51: Melanie> i'm sure kids are more rewarding though!!!
Jun 26, 16:51: Maryanne> Horses are definately cheaper than children and presently mine are only 6 and 2 years old
Jun 26, 16:52: Melanie> Sounds like you have a handfull there!!!
Jun 26, 16:52: Maryanne> The term never never comes from Jeannie Gunns book meaning you will never never know, if you never never go. Therefore you must experience before you can have an opinion
Jun 26, 16:53: Maryanne> I love both of my children and all of their mates, working part time as an eraly childhood teacher at the school, and also coordinating the current school holiday programme
Jun 26, 16:53: Ann has entered the room

Jun 26, 16:56: katrina> have I been to MAT??? Yes, I came with the JABA team to take pictures and interviews etc. the hot springs are exceptional Everyone should have a Mat experience in their lives

 Jun 26, 16:58: joe> hi maryanne
Jun 26, 16:58: Maryanne> Im sure that it is one that you should not forget, remembering that wee have not only the Thermal pools, but also Bitter Springs, a very old & historic pub, great friendly people, Old historic homesteads
Jun 26, 16:59: Melanie> what is the bitter springs?
Jun 26, 16:59: Maryanne> The connecting the continent site is a great one, and I believe that is an important way of showing our community to you all
 Jun 26, 17:00: joe> i worked out of mataranka in 1970-1973
Jun 26, 17:00: katrina> Maryanne I reckon Bitter Springs was one of the prettiest spots I have seen especially early morning
Jun 26, 17:00: Melanie> Yeh it's great...not only viewing the pictures but hearing the interviews are the best
Jun 26, 17:00: Maryanne> Bitter Springs are the original springs of Mataranka, they are thermal but have exceeding high content of calcium so therfore are bitter when drank. 100mls shall give you approx 6 times your daily average
Jun 26, 17:00: Maryanne> Joe Where did you work
Jun 26, 17:01: joe> i worked on the bridges on the roper bar road
Jun 26, 17:02: katrina> Gotta go, see you all next time great chatting! Thanks Maryanne
Jun 26, 17:02: Maryanne> Bitter Springs offers visitour an alternative to the very conjested, but beautiful, Thermal pools which are located approx 9 klms away. They are still not commonly known so still are in a very natural state
 Jun 26, 17:02: Melanie> see ya katrina
Jun 26, 17:03: Melanie> yeh the thermal pools will pull me in.....and the old buildings...
Jun 26, 17:03: Maryanne> Joe. Roper Bar unfortunate is a very dirty area today. many still travel there for the fishing, but unfortunately the liquor restrictions have made this a meeting area for those aboriginals off the lands to meet
Jun 26, 17:04: Melanie> the thermal pools will be known soon...by all the people looking at the website....watch out for all of the tourists!!
Jun 26, 17:05: joe> we had our camp in mat.i met my wife there
Jun 26, 17:05: Maryanne> The thermal polls are lovel;y, but the whole of the Roper River is one of the best assets that we have. Its cool and very clear waters runs all the way to the Port Roper approx 250 klms downstream
Jun 26, 17:06: Melanie> joe, would you recomend visiting Mat
Jun 26, 17:06: Maryanne> I personally would not like any other areas of the pools developed as I believe that progress has harmed many of these sensitive areas.
