Jun 23, 14:20: Bongo> if any of you get a chance to talk to the Advertiser dudes in Marree ... remind them to include the web address for this site when they do the stories ... we had 3 great stories today and no address ... not even in the site's daily diary!

Jun 23, 14:21: Kate> Good point Bongo. I will talk to them today. They will be here today and tonight.

Jun 23, 14:25: Karen has left the room
Jun 23, 14:26: Bongo> the site is still down ... only this chat window is alive ... grrrrr
Jun 23, 14:27: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, The Arabunna run week long tours through the winter (the tourist season here) so it is difficult to say who has been the most interesting, we have had people from all over Australia as well as a few from overseas, they all love the tours and say they have learned heaps about Aboriginal people and culture.
Jun 23, 14:28: Kate> I must fly also - we are having visitors through. I can not chat online and chat off line as well .... We may come back soon ..
Jun 23, 14:29: Donna> Jan Arabunna should have their own website, or do they already?
Jun 23, 14:29: Bongo> seeya Kate ... say Gidday to Denise and Roger from me
Jun 23, 14:30: Kate> Yep will do. Denise was hoping to log on at some stage.

Jun 23, 14:37: oasis cafe, Marree> Kym - Donna get the web cam up and I'll get steven and Trev to wave to you
Jun 23, 14:37: Bongo> donna ... it's not your computer ... the EDS server that hosts this site is currently crashed ... techos are working right now to fix the problem ... should only be a few more minutes

Jun 23, 14:40: Bongo> Jan ... so does this provide enough work ... or do you need more?
Jun 23, 14:41: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, we are currently doing about 8 tours per season, we could fit in a few more, but as its only a smallish operation we cannot go everyday, we do not have the people nor the equipment.
Jun 23, 14:41: carol> Hi, Bongo (us that an alias?). We are discussing taking a flight over Lake Eyre today or tomorrow - the weather is perfect and there is lots of water by all accounts.
Jun 23, 14:41: Bongo> donna ... the site is still down
Jun 23, 14:42: Denise has left the room
Jun 23, 14:42: Bongo> look out for strange men carved into the landscape ... is Brad flying you?

Jun 23, 14:49: carol> Bongo, I saw one of "the Advertiser dudes" and he thought that the web address was in the article - I think he would be very disappointed if it was editted out.

 Jun 23, 14:55: Bongo> yep ... the site's back up
Jun 23, 14:55: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, this is a big operation to connect people all over Australia, as a celebration of Federation. We are in central Australia in a Small town called Marree with a population of only about 100 people it is Marree's turn to be the chat room in this larger connection. Tomorrow the chat room will move north further into the centre of Australia.
Jun 23, 14:56: Bongo> yes ... looks like the oasis cafe is doing a good trade today ...
Jun 23, 14:56: Karen> And what on earth are you doing up at 1.45am Norma??

Jun 23, 14:58: Norma > I am studying about distance learning and I just can't get away from the computer..it si easier than all the reading I'm supposed to be doing..actually I made a mistake it's 12.45 am
Jun 23, 14:58: malcolm has entered the room
 Jun 23, 14:58: Welcome malcolm,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 14:58: Karen> I'm in Unley, South Australia - wishing I was in Marree and gazing longingly into their webcam...
Jun 23, 14:59: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. This area is famous for its Mound Springs, the water comes out of the ground through cracks and fault lines from the Great Artesian Basin which is probably the largest underground water system in the world. The Mound Springs are in an arc around the southern end of Lake Eyre which is an enormous Salt Lake which lies over the Basin. They are called Mound Springs because over the thousands of years that the water comes out it cements with the sand and rock and forms a small mound with a spring on the top. Some of the springs are large with a lot of water coming out but some are small with only a bit of soggy sand on the top.
Jun 23, 14:59: Karen> Well if you're studying distance learning you've come to the right place! Have you heard about our School of the Air?
Jun 23, 14:59: Donna> Is that Stephen looking into the webcam?
Jun 23, 14:59: malcolm> HI Iam malcolm how are you all.
Jun 23, 15:00: Norma > Can you explain to me how you communicate - from my Geography lessons at school you used other means of communication.
Jun 23, 15:00: Bongo> those springs are awesome ... my favourite is Blanche Cup ... very spectacular
 Jun 23, 15:00: Karen> G'day Malcolm
Jun 23, 15:00: Donna> Hi Malcolm Where are you from?
Jun 23, 15:00: oasis cafe, Marree> Stephen hello
Jun 23, 15:00: malcolm> Hi donna its your dad
Jun 23, 15:00: David> does any body have a link for test bank for Special Tertiary Admissions Test
 Jun 23, 15:01: Norma > Hi malcolm
Jun 23, 15:01: Donna> Hi Dad Hi Stephen
Jun 23, 15:01: Karen> I wish Kate was still here, she's from the Open Access College and could explain it a lot better than me, Norma - VERY basically that kids in remote areas get their schooling via radio hook ups
Jun 23, 15:02: Karen> Jan, I seem to remember in one of your audios that you were concerned about the future of the springs...
Jun 23, 15:02: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, Hi David where are you from, do you have any questions about the outback
Jun 23, 15:02: Norma > Oh I see Karen - I thought that you'd be using streaming audio and video nowadays
Jun 23, 15:03: malcolm> Hi Donna Im at Marree school doing a competer course
Jun 23, 15:03: Norma > What is the temperature in Marree?
Jun 23, 15:03: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, yes the springs are under threat, there is a lot of water being drawn from the basin now with the technology of bores so the pressure in the basin is going down, this affects the springs. But hopefully there is now water legislation in S.A. which says that the environment must get water also.
Jun 23, 15:04: Bongo> norma ... it is an amazing feat of technology that you are at least chatting AND watching from Marree ... outback Australia does not have the best telephone network ...
Jun 23, 15:04: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. the temperature in Marree today is app. 20 celcius
Jun 23, 15:04: Mark has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:04: Welcome Mark,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:05: Bongo> david ... wait for Kate to enter the room ... she can help you
 Jun 23, 15:05: David> ok
Jun 23, 15:05: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Hello Mark, where are you
 Jun 23, 15:05: David> thanks
Jun 23, 15:05: David> what is the discussion on again
Jun 23, 15:06: David> anybody know anything about the UWA medical school
Jun 23, 15:06: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. David we are connecting the continent of Australia so people can learn about people living across Australia.
Jun 23, 15:07: Bongo> Jan is our special guest ... and she is very passionate about the local environment ... she's also very friendly ... so ask her something
Jun 23, 15:07: Norma > watching? I can't see any pictures - should I be pressing some other buttons?
Jun 23, 15:07: carol> Norma, I am a teacher with Open Access (Robin, - on Denise's login because I am with the roadshow in Marree). I teach Year 12 Legal Studies by distance. We supply our students with written course materials and then we talk to them in a telephone conference of 4-8 students and teacher for 45mins -1 hr each week. The students also send assignments by mail or email which we mark and send back. We also now have some intenet-based course materials which the students access instead of the print version. If you would like to log into an online legal studies course to have a browse , please let me know .
Jun 23, 15:07: Mark> Hi Jan - I'm down here in Adelaide but thought I'd drop in for a little while to hear what you had to say.
 Jun 23, 15:07: David> ok
Jun 23, 15:07: David> what is Perth W. Australia like anyone
Jun 23, 15:08: David> i gather everyone here has dial up lol
 Jun 23, 15:08: David> ;)
Jun 23, 15:09: oasis cafe, Marree> Kym, Perth is loveley but we are talking about outback Australia today, any Questions
Jun 23, 15:09: Norma > Robin, Carol or Denise - I can't make out who I am talking to - I'd really love to logon to an access course- I have been asked to "lurk" in an online course to learn the techniques.
Jun 23, 15:09: Susan has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:09: Welcome Susan,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:09: David> what part of australia is defined as outback
Jun 23, 15:09: Bongo> the site has gone down again ... this chat room is ok ... but the rest ....grrrrr
Jun 23, 15:09: malcolm> Norma if you are at the Marree Hall I will see you in a minute
Jun 23, 15:09: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Hello Susan, where are you
 Jun 23, 15:10: Susan> Hi Jan - I'm in Adelaide - lived in Marree in 1980
 Jun 23, 15:10: Norma > what's the temperature - I imagine it's roasting outside
Jun 23, 15:11: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Outback Australia is mainly those areas in the centre of Australia and those areas away from the coast.
Jun 23, 15:11: Bongo> whatever the outback is ...Marree is in it!
Jun 23, 15:11: Mark> Jan - my son Stephen is with me and was asking how thre are water (mound) springs out in the middle of the outback
Jun 23, 15:11: David> where is the outbak area please
 Jun 23, 15:11: David> i don't know
Jun 23, 15:12: Norma > Do people tend to stay in their towns or travel to other places? Is it easy to get about?
Jun 23, 15:12: Anna has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:12: Welcome Anna,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:12: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. the springs are formed by water coming from the Great Artesian Basin, and as you can imagine they were very important as a source of water for animals plants and humans before the technology of bores was achieved.
Jun 23, 15:13: Bongo> the main site is back up again ...
 Jun 23, 15:13: David> good luck room
Jun 23, 15:13: David has left the room
Jun 23, 15:13: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Marree is 130 kilometers from the nearest other town of any size, if you do not have a car here you do not go anywhere.
Jun 23, 15:14: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Hello Anna where are you
Jun 23, 15:14: Susan> Marree had a very strong community spirit - is it still evident?
Jun 23, 15:14: Norma > robin shall I give you my details (email) here online or can I contact you away from this chat room?
Jun 23, 15:15: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Marree is a lot smaller than when you were here probably, but we still work together to keep the town going
Jun 23, 15:15: Anna> Hi to everybody! Sorry for being late but I couldn't connect to the site before, even if I woke up early. I'm from Italy. it's 7,15 am now
Jun 23, 15:16: Bongo> jan ... wave your hand in front of the webcam so we can time the delay ... if that's ok
Jun 23, 15:16: Ann has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:16: Welcome Ann,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:16: Norma > What is your source of income at Marree? Welcome Anna.
Jun 23, 15:17: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan Hello Ann where are you
Jun 23, 15:17: Mark has left the room
Jun 23, 15:17: Mark has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:17: Welcome Mark,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:17: carol> Give me your email details by whispering and Robin can contact you.
Jun 23, 15:18: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. There are not many sources of income in Marree, a few service places like the Hotel and shops etc. Some work on the Stations out of town but not a lot, quite a few people are on Governments benefits.
Jun 23, 15:18: Donna> Kym great close up in webcam love.
Jun 23, 15:18: carol> That last statement from me was meant to be a whisper - and it was directed to Norma regarding distance learning.
 Jun 23, 15:18: oasis cafe, Marree> THANKS
Jun 23, 15:19: Ann> Hi everyone, I'm from Myrtle Bank, Adelaide - but my heart is in Marree today - boy do I love that town - the whole thing should be declared a heritage site. It's truly fascinating
Jun 23, 15:19: Susan> Jan - what is the general response to people about whats happening with water from the Artesian basin - is there much concern among station people
Jun 23, 15:20: Anna> What animals are there around you?
Jun 23, 15:21: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Yes the stations rely wholly on artesian water to water their stock etc. So it is a big concern what happens to the basin water. There are a lot of people looking at the problems of the basin now and how to maintain the water without wasting it.
Jun 23, 15:22: Donna> How much rain has Marree had this year and is the area green. I am in Alice Springs and it is beautiful
 Jun 23, 15:22: malcolm> Susan I agree with Jan.
Jun 23, 15:22: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. In Marree and the Lake Eyre area the environment is Arid or Semi Desert. Kangaroos and Emus live here as well as Dingo's these would be the largest animals. There are many birds and reptiles as well in these desert environments as well as many small mammals such as hopping mice.
Jun 23, 15:23: Norma > Is alcohol much of a problem in the Outback?
Jun 23, 15:23: Denise has left the room
Jun 23, 15:23: Denise has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:23: Welcome Denise,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:23: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. There has been quite a bit of rain this year and the environment is a bit greener than usual but it is still desert country and looks it
Jun 23, 15:23: Denise has left the room
Jun 23, 15:24: Ann> Do you noticed more animals around the Marree area after rain?
Jun 23, 15:24: Bongo> gidday Denise ... are you still being zapped into Carol ...??
Jun 23, 15:25: sue has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:25: Welcome sue,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:25: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Alcohol is a problem anywhere, but I would say that in general small towns would consume more alcohol that in other places this would be because there is not much else to do. But in Marree it does not create social problems as much as it does in other towns.
Jun 23, 15:26: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. After rain you would see more movement of animals but they do not increase in population as you would need a lot of continuous rain to create any changes in animal breeding
Jun 23, 15:26: Norma > Thank you for my introduction to the Australian Outback. I certainly didn't realise I was coming from Ireland to pitssburgh to talk to Australia! I'll be off in a moment or two.
Jun 23, 15:27: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. Susan, Malcom is not here but there are concerns about large industries taking water from the basin as they require such large amounts. I do not think that any more large companies would be allowed to take water any more.
Jun 23, 15:28: Ann> Jan - is the water being taken out of the great artesian basin? How is it affecting the mound springs?
Jun 23, 15:29: Jšrg has entered the room
 Jun 23, 15:29: Welcome Jšrg,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:29: Norma has left the room
Jun 23, 15:29: Mark> Jan - Marree Man is in today's 'tiser again. We're all dying to know who created him and given that he's fading, is there a chance that he'll get a new lease of life?
Jun 23, 15:29: Jšrg has left the room
Jun 23, 15:29: Susan has left the room
Jun 23, 15:29: sue> Hi all How is the computer course going at the school in Marree? Are you coming down to have a look at the show in the hall or are you going to wait until your course finishes today?
Jun 23, 15:30: Jšrg has entered the room

Jun 23, 15:30: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan. to Ann, yes water is being taken in large amounts from the Basin, and the springs are being affected, but there are a lot of people now looking at the use of the water and hopefully there will be a more sustainable approach to water use in the future.

Jun 23, 15:35: Norma has left the room
Jun 23, 15:36: Ann> Jan - can you tell us about the Hergott Spring and its relationship to the Dreaming? I know the Mound springs are associated with the Wabma story

Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:37: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan, to Ann, I do not know the dreaming story of Hergott Springs But there are hundreds of springs around the Lake and they all have different dreaming stories relating to them. The Wabma (or Snake) dreaming is the Mound Complex called Blanche Cup and the Bubbler.
Jun 23, 15:39: oasis cafe, Marree> Jan is leaving now, hope everything goes well, the Oasis crew are still here to answer questions
Jun 23, 15:39: Ann> does the Wabma story share the theme common to many dreaming stories across Australia of the giant snae which carves the landscape?

 Jun 23, 15:41: Welcome Mary,
Welcome to the CTC chat room!
Jun 23, 15:42: Jšrg> next time we want to head north to lake eyre. Do you know something about this track?
 Jun 23, 15:42: Mary> G'day everybody
Jun 23, 15:42: oasis cafe, Marree> good we are having a beautiful busy day. we have got the centenary crew here today they are doing a roadshow for the kids and tonight we have some entertainment from the borderers
Jun 23, 15:42: oasis cafe, Marree> Howdy Mary
Jun 23, 15:43: Mary> I know you are busy I couldn't get on for ages
Jun 23, 15:44: Ann> I know wabma is the Aboriginal word for snake in a lot of Aboriginal languages - we had some Aboriginal women at our place for spaghetti bolognaise one night and my aprtner came through the door with a rubber snake in hishand and called out Wabma! All the old ladies hit the ceiling with fright. You should have heard them all scream!
Jun 23, 15:44: oasis cafe, Marree> Jorg if you want to go to Lake Eyre South the best way is to go through Muloorina Station, you can then travel up through to where the two lakes meet, and see where Donald Cambell broke the ;land speed record, But at the moment due to rain this particular track is closed temporarily
Jun 23, 15:44: Ann> Is there a limit on how many people can get into this chat room at any one time?
Jun 23, 15:45: oasis cafe, Marree> not that I know of
Jun 23, 15:45: Donna> Chelsea have you been out to the lake?
Jun 23, 15:46: Ann> looks from the web cam like the cafe has had a lot of people in it today
Jun 23, 15:46: oasis cafe, Marree> only at night time, I'm being honest when I say that I have yet to find the time on a day off when I don't have a hangover and can drive out there
Jun 23, 15:47: oasis cafe, Marree> Ann we certainly have. It has mainly been people from the centenary group, but business is business
Jun 23, 15:47: Mary> how does the webcam work is it a live coverage
Jun 23, 15:47: Donna> You must go for a fly though it is magic country
Jun 23, 15:48: Anna> to come to see you do you need a 4W car?
 Jun 23, 15:48: john> yeh i,ve heard its nice
Jun 23, 15:49: Ann> yes, the web cam is sending live coverage down to Adelaide South Australia and we are broadcasting it through the web site from here - the frequency of the refresh is dicated by the bandwidth of the phoen lines in the outback, as I understand it
Jun 23, 15:49: Ann> I'm glad our centenary people are keeping you busy
 Jun 23, 15:49: Jšrg> i go always by 4 wd
Jun 23, 15:50: oasis cafe, Marree> i know that I should but the silly pilot never seems to have a seat available in my time off. i have seen some photos from when it rained and it looks spectacular. As for 4wd it actually depends on road conditions at the time. But if you really want to see the lake the best thing to do is pop into the cafe and book a scenic flight, and then you will truely understand how big Lake
Jun 23, 15:50: Jšrg> in february 2000 i got nearly stucked, a lot of rain
Jun 23, 15:50: Donna has left the room

Jun 23, 15:52: Jšrg> can we book a scenic flight in the oasis cafe?

 Jun 23, 15:53: Jšrg> yes

Jun 23, 15:54: oasis cafe, Marree> There is one hotel in Marree, and the nearest city would have to be i guess Port Augusta, it is about 5 hours away
